Educational Therapist and Learning Specialist,
Sub-specialty in Childhood and Adult Attention Deficit Disorder

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Adults (individuals and couples), families, children, teens

The counseling approach I use is based on an understanding of each individual’s unique strengths and challenges, and how they may impact relationships. By exploring the ways wiring and/or chemical imbalances can cause inappropriate behavior, communication problems and/or learning difficulties, individuals are relieved of the shame, blaming and judging that so often makes “therapy” an endless string of complaint sessions. Effective strategies are taught that make a practical difference in real world living. Susan also uses a cognitive approach to questioning stresssful or painful thoughts and stories, developed by Byron Katie, called The Work. (Please see link for more information.)

ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND OTHER MOOD INSTABILITIES

A unique blend of talk therapy, cognitive restructuring, behavior therapy, as well as neurofeedback and biofeedback therapy all are used as needed to help individuals shift out of the thoughts, beliefs and neurological patterns that hold us hostage.

AD/HD ACROSS THE LIFESPAN

Help for Children, Teens and Adults:
Whether you believe in “labels” or not, if you (or your child) are plagued by disorganization, impulsivity, procrastination, difficulty staying focused, distractibility, impatience, forgetfulness, fidgetiness, low frustration tolerance, a poor sense of time, or an overabundance of chaos and drama, life can be very difficult. My clients are taught usable learning tricks, practical life and time management skills, and realistic organizational techniques that make life much easier. By understanding what AD/HD actually is (and isn’t), the frustration and guilt that make life with this challenge so difficult can be eliminated.

RECLAIMING YOUR CHILD

Susan's work with children and adolescents focuses on helping restore the loving and healthy relationship that provides a base from which emotional, academic and psychological problems can begin to be transformed and healed. Susan's family counseling is all about helping parents rediscover the value of their own intuition, their own strength in knowing their child better than any expert could, and in helping bring kids from depression, oppositional defiance, anxiety, anger, sullenness and over-involvement with their peers by reclaiming the profound connection essential to every parent and child.

EDUCATIONAL THERAPY

Strategies for true success in school:
With a background in teaching, extensive training in right-brained, alternative learning techniques, and years of experience as a Marriage, Family and Child therapist, I address both the learning and the emotional/ psychological factors influencing academic problems. There are many alternative approaches to studying and remembering that can make scholastic success a reality for learners who have lost their passion for learning.
